Madness 1.00 (26-Jan-97)
Name: ArtWorks Madness module
Purpose: Has there always to be one?
Author: Martin Würthner
Requires: RISC OS 3.1 or higher, ArtWorks 1.138 or higher
Status: FreeWare (I guess no-one would pay anything anyway!)
Disclaimer: I do not accept any responsibility for any loss of data resulting from
the use of this module. Do not use it when you have important data in
memory.
Do not miss my other ArtWorks modules:
Polygon (ShareWare, £10 registration for private users) - introduces Polygon objects
Intersect (available to registered users of Polygon only) - clips arbitrary shapes
Translate (FreeWare) - accurate movement of objects
ShowXY (FreeWare) - continuous display of pointer coordinates
1) Installation
---------------
Copy the !MadnessT application inside the !ArtWorks.Auto directory. (Shift
double-click on !ArtWorks to open it, then double-click on the 'Auto' folder.
Then drag the !MadnessT application to the Filer window showing
<something>.!ArtWorks.Auto in its title bar). This will cause ArtWorks to
load the module automatically next time it is started.
If you are not using the 'Quick start' feature of ArtWorks, then this is it
already. Otherwise (this is recognized by the fact the ArtWorks only displays
one icon 'Quick start' when starting up) you have to go on:
If the 'Quick start' option is selected in the ArtWorks choices window you
have to perform the following steps in order for ArtWorks to recognize the
new module:
* Load ArtWorks
* Open the ArtWorks choices window (icon bar menu 'Choices...', then click on
the ArtWorks icon in the ArtWorks global choices window)
* Deselect 'Quick start' and click on 'Save'
* Quit ArtWorks
* Reload ArtWorks - while loading ArtWorks shows every module it loads, this
should now include the MadnessT module. If ArtWorks displays an error message
like "Due to lack of memory one or more modules could not be loaded ..."
something has gone wrong and you should check whether you have correctly
installed the module.
* Open the ArtWorks choices window again
* Select 'Quick start' and click on 'Save'
If you ever should want to deinstall the module, remove the !MadnessT
directory from the !ArtWorks.Auto directory. Then, if you are using
the 'Quick start' option, you must repeat the same steps above.
2) The Madness tool
In order to see what Madness does, simply create a few objects, then select the
Madness tool from the tool box. Madness is deactivated by selecting any other
tool. Note that there are some peculiar points to be noted about the Undo
facility:
* You have to deactivate the Madness tool before trying to undo the operation
* DO NOT USE ANY ARTWORKS FEATURES WHILE MADNESS IS RUNNING. You risk to lose
the ability to correctly undo the changes Madness applied to the document. In
particular, do not press any ArtWorks key shortcuts (i.e. F8 for Undo, or
Ctrl-X to cut an object etc.). All sorts of nasty effects can occur if you do.
While madness is running, you can modify the amount by which the objects are
moved by filling in different values in the 'Offset X' and 'Offset Y' fields.
When doing so take care not to enter any ArtWorks key shortcuts that modify the
document!
No matter how much your document is modified by Madness, do not worry because
after deactivating Madness you can undo all the madness which happened by choosing
Undo from the window's menu or by pressing F8. However, if you modified the
document in any way while Madness was active, this is almost guaranteed to fail.
In order to save processing time, a maximum of 128 objects is moved at the same
time. However, even this number easily causes a StrongARM to look slow! The reason
is that every times the objects are moved, the whole document has to be redrawn.
So, to speed things up, scale down the document.
For a nice effect, write a few lines of text in 12pt, convert them to shapes,
deselect them, select the Madness tool and watch all these characters move...
